Hospital Laboratory Technician III

ResponsibilitiesProvides administrative, technical, and maintenance support to the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine under the general supervision of a supervisor, technical supervisor, department Director and/or designated other responsible technical personnel. The HLT III is in charge of ordering supplies and equipment to ensure the department is providing high quality patient care. The HLT III acts as the liaison between the operating room and outpatient centers to troubleshoot specimens that are mislabeled or improperly submitted to the laboratory. HLT III performs pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical activities including but not limited to answering phones to respond to questions within scope of knowledge, accessioning and processing of primary specimens, assisting residents in the performance of frozen sections, including embedding, sectioning and staining of the frozen sections. HLT III performs the specimen grossing and takes a photograph of fresh/ gross specimens. Reagent preparation, operating, cleaning and maintaining work area and laboratory equipment, troubleshooting specimen/test order problems, filing, and participating in special studies as required by laboratory management and medical staff. The HLT III, under guidance of the supervisor, will oversee their assigned area to see that all procedures meet the protocol stated in the procedure manual and understand CAP and TJC guidelines pertinent to his/her assigned area within the laboratory. Tracks laboratory supplies and places orders as necessary. The HLT III ensures that all work is performed properly and in a timely manner. Other duties may include monitoring inventories of media, supplies and reagents used in diagnostic testing, quality control/quality assurance support, computer operation (report printing) and data entry and retrieval. Must be able to work weekends, holidays and other shifts. Ability to be reassigned to areas as needed and on a daily basis. Assess overall workload for any area that needs help, and help co-workers without being asked by the supervisor. Ability to speak clearly and distinctly using correct English to answer telephones and communicate with departmental and hospital personnel.

QualificationsHLT III must be qualified as high complexity testing personnel under CLIA-88 regulations. The minimum training/experience required of such personnel is:
1. An earned associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution, OR
2. Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination. In addition, the individual must have laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
