Environmental Health & Safety Specialist I

ResponsibilitiesThe Environmental Health and Safety Specialist I assists the Operations Manager and the Assistant Operations Manager in the management of over 200,000 SF that houses the administrative, teaching, and research lab functions of the Dept of Pathology and Lab Medicine. This position involves an emphasis on the safety, compliance, and ergonomic issues for the research, academic, and administrative areas, and special project support.
Responsibilities include management of the departmental Safety, Compliance, Ergonomic, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP); Perform lab safety inspections; chair and conduct safety meetings, develop safety agendas, and create meeting minutes; maintain and update content of Pathology Safety IIPP and School of Medicine Chemical Hygiene Plan; Reviews UCLA Safety & Compliance programs with new faculty and Lab Safety Liaisons; Conduct individual and group ergonomic training, writes ergonomic evaluations, and recommends ergonomic upgrades; Maintains and updates the Pathology Safety Compliance, and Common Equipment departmental website contents. This position also requires responsibility in: Compiling technical information on equipment/utility needs; Taking measurements of rooms and equipment, and diagramming plans to scale; Provides special project support for the Operations Manager. The position's responsibilities also include: Triaging/processing incoming departmental requests an verifying satisfactory completion of requests for goods or services. Writing FSRs, TSRs, etc. Verifying completion of facility/safety requests, punch lists, service and equipment deliveries, etc. Communicating with people (via e-mail, telephone, or in person) on status of project/tasks, estimated completion dates, and final completion dates.

QualificationsDemonstrated knowledge of safe wet lab and facility practices, to include safe chemical handling, biohazard and radiation safety precautions, etc. Ability to oversee the safe decommissioning of a research laboratory in compliance with all pertinent regulations and protocols. Ability to chair and conduct lab safety meetings. Facilitate safety and compliance self-inspections of research labs. Review results of safety inspections; compile data and reports. Maintain departmental Safety Bulletin Board to include changes in protocols, training announcements, and other safety information. Assist the Operations Manager and Assistant Operations Manager in implementing and responsibility for maintaining a departmental Emergency Response Plan. Experience in conducting and reviewing accident investigations preferred. Update and maintain website information for researchers: Compliance, Safety, and Emergency Response Planning. Advanced skill with computer programs, e.g.: Outlook, Word, Excel, Visio, and University databases/websites, and with budget/expense tracking. Skill in analyzing information/situations, defining problems, formulating logical conclusions and recognizing alternatives and their implications. Advanced ability to organize written and electronic records in a logical, orderly manner for ease of retrieval. Advanced ability to show attention to detail, accuracy, and thoroughness. Advanced skill in handling multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to work collaboratively and competently in a fast-paced, high-pressure setting with rapidly changing priorities. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Ability to write and speak clearly, concisely, logically, and grammatically correct. Ability to take measurements of rooms/equipment, diagram plans to scale, and read schematics. Experience must include successful and timely completion of projects, preferably in a scientific, research, or healthcare environment. Ability to walk and/or drive between buildings and project sites. Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, carrying, reaching, bending, and stooping. Graduation from college with a major in lab science or equivalent strongly desired. A minimum of 2 years of experience in safety and compliance preferred. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
